Transitions Orphan Assistance Foundation, Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that benefits orphans who have aged-out of the orphanages in Odessa, Ukraine, and are living on their own for the first time. This program encourages them towards higher education, assists as necessary with physical, emotional, and medical needs, and helps them to acquire the life skills necessary in order to make the transition from life in an orphanage to independent living.

What We Do

TRANSITIONS ORPHAN ASSISTANCE FOUNDATION has had a very hands-on, very personal mission in Odessa, Ukraine since 2008, when we began to visit and mentor orphans in Orphanage #4.   When this group of orphans aged-out of the orphanage in 2011, our focus changed from orphanage ministry to assistance to the older orphan.  Our goal is to build relationship with orphans through physical, emotional, medical, educational and spiritual assistance. Currently, Transitions facilitates, participates in, and funds several programs and projects:

The Graduate Program, started in 2011 when the group we had been working with at Orphanage #4 aged-out of the orphanage and essentially had no one to turn to for help and guidance. We decided to continue in relationship with them, to mentor and assist. We host dinners at our homes or a local restaurant to celebrate birthdays, holidays and special occasions. We mentor and advise and work on life skills, including budgeting, and assist as necessary with expenses for food, clothing, toiletries, and medical needs.

The Backpack Project was developed in 2012 to help newly emancipated orphans (between the ages of 14 and 16) through their first six to eight weeks of independence while they wait for government stipends to begin. Each September, those who graduate or age-out from Orphanage #5 and Pishana Orphanage receive a backpack filled with food, dishes, toiletries, and educational supplies, along with an invitation to join our Graduate Program.

Homes for Orphan Graduates began in 2014. Over the course of three years, we, in partnership with another orphan assistance group, built small homes for young men who lived in a Christian home for orphan graduates while they completed post-secondary education and who would otherwise have no means of attaining permanent housing without our help. The first three homes were completed at the end of 2016, and three young families now call them home on a rent-to-own basis.  A second tract of land was purchased in 2017 purchased and three more homes are now completed, bringing the total of rent-to-own homes to six!   We are actively seeking funds for the next phase of this project, a row of townhomes.

In 2016, we began to fund an orphanage assistance program at Trinity Orphanage through the Evangelical Christian Church of the Trinity (Odessa, Ukraine) who make monthly visits to the orphanage.

New Hope Transitional Home, our newest project, was established in 2017 in order to give these aged-out orphans a safe place to live during the gap years – after the orphanage and before independent living. New Hope Transitional Home was established, providing for up to ten aged-out orphan boys to enjoy family-style living with house parents in a safe, comfortable, loving environment.  In the summer of 2019, we expanded this project to include a home for girls as well, and renamed the project New Hope Transitional Homes for Boys and Girls. We are in constant need of financial gifts to support the boys and girls who live in these homes.

In addition, we support and assist in Alternatives to Adoption for older orphans. The United States will not allow adoption of any child who is the age of sixteen or older; therefore, we have been seeking alternative arrangements. Canada permits educational and work visas through family sponsorships. We assist our older orphans in finding these opportunities. We also assist graduates who wish to immigrate to other countries where they have family or relatives and would achieve a better, safer lifestyle. If you live in Canada (or another country that encourages immigration opportunities) and you are interested in sponsoring one of our older orphans, or if you wish to give financial support to a sponsored orphan, please let us know.

Transitions Orphan Assistance Foundation is able to provide these services and programs only through donations. Your dollars change lives. If you wish to help or would like more information, please contact us.
